Entomology (Bug class)

Dave will dip net the pond with students and show them living samples of the basic foods trout like most. These samples will then be "matched" to the corresponding fly. A one and a half inch Dragon Fly nymph is a scary looking beast!

Equipment

A working knowledge of fly rods, reels, lines and flies is useful and helps take the mystery out of flyfishing.

Knots

Losing a good fish to a poor knot is not fun. Dave will help you learn the three or four knots needed. We practice using colour coded cord and each student takes home a review booklet that covers all the elements of the course.

Casting

In this lesson, basic casting is demonstrated and practised. Dave evaluates and suggests ways to make casting a fly 30 feet an effortless movement. Practice time is important to hone the skills of this class.

Shooting line and fishing the fly

In this class you will build upon your casting skills and add the ability to shoot line. Then you will be taught various methods of fishing the fly through the water.

The roll cast

The roll cast is a useful addition to your fishing skills. This cast is a must have if you enjoy fishing Ontario's wonderful trout streams.

Putting it all together

Fishing Lochanbec's spring fed water for wild brook trout and rainbows finishes off the day. This is the time to put all your new found knowledge to work! We use barbless hooks and encourage catch and release. However, you may keep a fish for supper.
