Driftboating

The newest addition to The Lochanbec School of Flyfishing

Driftboating is a fabulous way to flyfish some of Southern Ontario's larger rivers. This method of fishing has been popular in the western rivers of the USA and in BC for many years. Last fall I successfully drifted and explored the fishing on the Maitland, Saugeen and Nottawasaga Rivers. During the week there was no one else fishing the sections the driftboat could access and we discovered that you do not have to be an expert caster to reach some of the best lies on the river. The boat does that for you.

Season and species

From mid April to mid May the best fishing is for Steelhead on the Saugeen, Maitland and Nottawasaga rivers. I like to fish the Maitland for drop back rainbows that are on the mend. These 5 to 8 lb fish feed heavily and will even come to a dry fly. Timing is everything for Steelhead. We recommend you book a weekday or weekend of fishing then check by phone with me one or two days before the booking. If the fishing does not look promising I'll tell you and we'll cancel or try another date. During the summer months, late May through to September, we fish for Browns and Smallmouth Bass on the Saugeen and Maitland rivers. Water levels and temperature play an important part of summer fishing, so again, book a date then check with me a day or two in advance. In the fall, beginning in September, we fish for steelhead and salmon on the Nottawasaga River and the lower stretches of the Saugeen. In October and November, the fall steelheading is good on all three rivers.

Cost for a day of driftboating is $180 for one person and $230 for two

Most flyfishers who drift fish are not beginners and have their own equipment and flies. So I encourage you to bring your gear. When booking a date we usually discuss equipment to ensure yours is matched to the type of fishing we will be doing. We can supply all the equipment you will need. Sylvia packs us a good lunch. Sometimes we stop and get out to wade productive pools and to stretch our legs. It is recommended that you bring waders. If necessary, we have several pairs we can lend you depending on your size.

Final note

Be prepared for a long day! Driftboating is an exciting, relaxed way to enjoy fishing spots most people cannot get to. It is weather dependent and water temperature and flow are important factors to consider. So book a date that looks promising, and then we will touch base several days in advance to check the conditions. I try to keep abreast about which river is fishing the best and if the migrating fish are in the river.
